Denkamilk calves - 11 November 2024

We know that colostrum quality is important. But does a higher Brix value of colostrum truly lead to a higher total protein value in the calf’s blood? To answer this question, we collected data from 80 calves on participating dairy farms.

In this study, participating dairy farmers receive feedback on their data. Parameters studied include the brix value of colostrum and total protein in the calf’s blood. Total protein is measured in the calf’s blood and is an indicator of colostrum provision.  The dairy farm recorded the Brix values of the first colostrum given to the calves. The total protein values were measured once the calves arrived at the calf raiser.

Relationship Between the Brix Value of the First Colostrum

The graph below shows that there is a relationship between the Brix value of the first colostrum and the total protein value in the calf’s blood. The higher the Brix value, the higher the total protein value in the blood.

In the second graph, the Brix values are divided into three categories. The first category contains colostrum with a Brix value less than 21, the second category contains colostrum with Brix values from 21 to 24, and the last category includes colostrum with Brix values of 24 or higher. As seen in the graph, higher Brix values lead to higher total protein values in the blood, with a notable increase in total protein values when the Brix value exceeds 24 compared to when it goes from <21 to <24.

Conclusion on Good Colostrum Management

Good colostrum management is crucial for a calf’s immunity. High-quality colostrum (Brix value > 24) results in high total protein values in the calf’s blood.
