“The key is to get as many immunoglobulins (IgGs) into the calf as possible,” explains young animal specialist Henk Sijtsma. The Brix meter is a handy tool that allows you to measure the amount of IgGs in the colostrum. Henk emphasizes the importance of the quantity of colostrum. “Ideally, feed 10% of the body weight in colostrum within the first twelve hours, preferably within half an hour after birth. This usually means four liters of colostrum. At a Brix value of 22, this equates to 200 ml of IgGs. Don’t be alarmed if the colostrum has a Brix value of 20. This is not bad colostrum, but you should feed more liters of it or supplement it with colostrum powder to improve its quality.”
Understanding Brix Values in Colostrum
Denkamilk calves - 13 March 2025
The Brix value determines the quality of colostrum. However, a lower Brix value does not mean you cannot use the colostrum, as long as you provide enough liters to the calf.

Beware of Bacteria
Note: The Brix value does not indicate the presence of bacteria. If the colostrum contains bacteria, your calf may not benefit from the antibodies in the colostrum. Antibodies attach to bacteria, which is their job. They become ‘occupied’ by bacteria, making them unusable for the calf. Therefore, always use clean equipment, from mini-milkers to buckets, and store your colostrum cleanly to avoid contamination with bacteria. Read more about ideal hygiene practices here.
