Denkamilk calves - 21 March 2025

Starting with pellets immediately after the colostrum phase, ensuring gradual feed transitions, and finding the right balance between milk replacer and pellets are key factors in achieving optimal rumen development in young calves.

Youngstock Specialist Henk Sijtsma strongly advocates offering calves water and pellets from day three. “Since rumen papillae begin developing from the second week of life, it is crucial that the calf starts eating pellets early. Even though feed intake is low in the first few weeks, research shows that starting in week one is beneficial. The sooner a calf begins eating pellets, the quicker it can process them and transition to roughage. This leads to more efficient forage digestion later on.”

Henk’s rule of thumb is that a calf should consume around 20 kg of pellets before introducing roughage. “A small amount of hay in the first few weeks provides volume in the rumen, but effective nutrient absorption from forage is only possible once the rumen papillae are well developed. If all goes well, a calf can consume 1 kg of pellets per day by week six. At that point, milk feeding can be gradually reduced while pellet intake increases to 2 kg per day. Once calves reach this level, weaning can begin.”

Gradual Feed Transitions

In addition to an early start, gradual feed transitions are vital for rumen development. If you plan to introduce a post-weaning milk-based ration, start doing so during the milk-feeding phase to prevent acidosis. “Acidosis causes the rumen papillae to shrink, setting back rumen development,” warns Henk. Similarly, milk replacer should be gradually reduced over three weeks.

Don’t Forget Water

Milk enters the abomasum, while pellets go into the rumen, where microbes ferment them—a process that requires water. Unlimited access to clean, fresh water is essential. Additionally, maintaining proper hydration supports a stronger immune system and keeps protective mucous layers in the eyes, intestines, and nose at optimal thickness.

Smart Combination of Calf Pellets and Milk Replacer

Choosing the right combination of pellets and Denkamilk is crucial. “In some cases, feeding less milk in combination with high-quality pellets is beneficial, while in others, the reverse is true,” says Henk. This approach can also be financially advantageous. For tailored advice on the best combination for your farm, consult your Denkavit specialist.
