Denkamilk calves - 2 April 2025

“A cow is born with just enough lung capacity, unlike many other animals that have far more lung capacity than they actually need,” explains young cattle specialist Henk Sijtsma. “Damage to the lungs, such as from pneumonia, is irreversible and results in lifelong loss of lung capacity.” This is why it’s crucial to keep your calves’ lungs healthy.

A healthy calf grows optimally and has ideal resistance. A healthy calf is less likely to develop respiratory problems. Disinfecting the naval area is step one in preventing lung issues, read more about it here.

Be Aware of Temperature Differences

Temperature fluctuations increase the risk of respiratory problems. This is why we often see more lung issues in autumn, when the temperature difference between day and night is greater. “Try to keep the temperature as stable as possible. Windbreaks, shelters over the calf pens, or calf blankets can help. Feel free to also make use of the Denkavit Klimaat Platform,” advises Henk.

Keep Young and Old Youngstock Separate

Try to minimize the age gap between groups to prevent the transmission of lung problems. “Also be aware of younger animals coming into contact with older ones through the fence or a shared water trough,” warns Henk. In the case of automatic drinkers, the infection pressure is higher because all animals drink from the same teat, and younger calves often come into contact with older animals. “Giving larger portions of milk, so that calves drink, for example, four times a day instead of eight, reduces the risk of infection,” Henk suggests.

Provide Extra Support for Your Calves via Milk

During a calf peak, seasons with more temperature fluctuations, or around changes such as moving to group housing, you can offer extra support for your calves’ airways. Vitalair powder is a supplement added to the milk based on eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is soothing and also works as an expectorant in the airways.

Tailored Advice with the Denkavit Climate Platform

Feel free to seek the assistance of the Denkavit Climate Platform. This platform brings together all the knowledge from pig farming, veal farming, goat farming, and dairy farming sectors. With special measurement tools, the team can monitor the climatic conditions inside and around your barn 24/7. Not just wind effects and temperature fluctuations, but also ammonia levels, CO2, fine dust, and humidity. This provides a comprehensive picture and clear guidance for improvements. “And it’s often the small details, such as placing a large bale of straw in the group pen near the calf drinker so the calves can lie out of the wind,” shares Henk’s experience. Feel free to ask a regional specialist for more information about the Denkavit Climate Platform.
